Danger Traveling Abroad in an Impecunious State

The Harsh Reality of Migration: A Call for Awareness

Living in a society where plans rarely unfold as intended can be deeply frustrating. In such situations, "frustration" often feels like an understatement. Starting each day with no clear idea of your next step—or even what to eat—can be overwhelming. So, can we really blame those who are desperate to leave their homeland for greener pastures, even at great personal risk? Perhaps not entirely.

It’s no longer news that a significant number of African youths—around 50%, many in their prime—aspire to leave their countries. In some places, like Nigeria, 9 out of 10 young people dream of moving abroad. This dream stems from harsh economic realities: skyrocketing costs of food, housing, and clothing. Nigeria’s economy, for instance, is a source of constant distress. Yet, despite these challenges, it’s possible to survive and thrive with the right mindset and choices.

Unfortunately, many fall prey to smugglers disguised as travel agents, who exploit the vulnerability of desperate individuals. These fraudsters offer enticing promises, asking only for passports and visas while conveniently omitting the risks involved. Their victims are often left uninformed about the dangers they’ll face. Worse, those who survive the horrors rarely share their experiences due to fear of stigma or trauma. Those who do muster the courage to speak up are often shunned or dismissed by society.

Shockingly, many of these smugglers have themselves endured the same dehumanizing experiences they now lead others into. Instead of discouraging such perilous journeys, they mask the truth, luring victims with sugarcoated success stories. For them, it’s about financial gain, with the mindset, “If I survived, so can they.” This deceit preys on the desperation of individuals seeking to escape countries that appear to have little regard for their citizens’ well-being.

Tragically, I’ve seen people quit jobs or sell valuable properties, all in pursuit of these illusory promises. Many end up in slavery, losing their lives, sanity, or sense of humanity along the way. Smugglers and traffickers recruit innocent young people with impunity, feeding on ignorance and the failures of careless parenting. Some parents, unaware of the harsh realities, willingly hand over their children, thinking, “My child is going abroad.” This lack of awareness is devastating, as ignorance does not exempt anyone from the harsh consequences of their actions.

For those who choose dangerous routes—crossing deserts, seas, jungles, or even underground tunnels—the journey often ends in imprisonment, starvation, and death. Survivors recount horrific tales of organ harvesting and abuse. Yet many embark on these journeys unaware of the true risks, misled by promises of a better life.

Even for those who manage to reach their destination, the struggle is far from over. Many find themselves trapped in forced labor, prostitution, or other degrading situations, with no access to family or support systems. Their traffickers profit from their suffering, perpetuating a cycle of exploitation. Over time, these victims resign to their fates, haunted by memories of the friends they lost and the traumas they endured.

The Importance of Rational Decisions
Contentment and rational decision-making are essential in life. Acting out of frustration is like jumping into an ocean without a life jacket, knowing you can’t swim. Many who embark on these deadly journeys are driven by a lack of contentment and hope. However, frustration with one’s circumstances should never lead to decisions that jeopardize one’s physical and mental well-being.

A beautiful life isn’t built on shortcuts or irrational decisions. Success requires determination and careful planning. Whatever challenges you face, know they are temporary. It’s the lessons you learn and the resilience you build that will guide you through life’s hurdles.

Dream Big, But Act Wisely
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming of starting a new life abroad, but it must be done with dignity and awareness. If you’re considering migration, ensure you have the proper information and resources. Avoid dangerous shortcuts that could cost you your freedom—or your life.

Together, we can save lives by raising awareness. If you’ve experienced these challenges or know someone who has, share your story to inform and protect others. Let’s work together to create change, starting with you and me.
